Hello Gilad is here. So you want to buy a ring and you consider to buy it on-line. Well, don’t be mistake I will be more then happy if you buy through a link on the website, however I will be more happy if you will leave this website with the feeling that you got some valuable knowledge possibly some warnings and points to consider so you can be happy with your purchase and have the finish this long process of finding a ring with the feeling that you satisfy with what you got.
Well, I am talk too much because the best thing to do is simply read other customers reviews. So I did that for you, or actually as a preface for your reading of reviews and tried to find potential problems when buying diamond ring on-line. Here is what I found:
Possibly No 1 Problem: Seeing the real thing in your eyes and see it in a picture is not the same!!!
A closeup picture absolutely magnify the impression ring create. Think of it like this, when a diamond rind is on a hand, you usually see it from a distance of at least half a meter. This is far from being a closeup view. Here is my advice, and you will probably think of some more ideas: If you can find the model you like in a store and take a look in the real thing, that is the best. Then you can decide where do you prefer to purchase. However, if this is not possible look at it the ring in perspective – meaning compare distance view Vs closeup view. The distance view (usually a small image) is closer to how this ring will look like on hand.
But how can you do that? Amazon for example, give you links to view few images of a product, on this case diamond rings. When you open this link you will see below small images and above the closeup view of the selected image below. The smaller image represent a view from distance. So you can see for example, that a ring, when you put it on hand, will probably look thinner then it is actually look like in a closeup picture.
Here is an example – use this link to get into product description and use then use link from left to open the images view (this link is a shortcut for what you will see):

Issue No 2 : Again an issue of perspective. Some report they are disappointed while other report they are surprised for good, and I mean the size of the stone with comparing to total size of the ring. No argue – large diamond is nice! Too small (in someone eyes) diamond on the other may lead to disappointment. I think that a very basic geometry can solve this problem or at least reduce it. In this case the closeup image will help us:
A ring is 360 degree “arch”. Now, take a look at the image and try to estimate which part of the arch is occupied by stones. In this 60 degree maybe 45 degree maybe 90 degree? This will give you an estimation of the perspective between stone(s) part and the entire ring.
Issue No 3 – The color: You should expect to get some difference in colors then what you see in the picture. For example, some reviews for example refer to the difference between the way the “blue” stone looks like in a picture and the way it looks like in real life. Well, no surprise! when a closeup picture is taken the illumination can change the color reflected by the stone. (I assume that no Photoshop work has been done in addition, although it is a possibility).
My advice – take a look at some real life example of stones (in this case blue stone) and get a better perspective.
Issue No 4 – The psychology of reading buyers reviews: I assume that you access the task of selecting a diamond ring with a lot of desire, however when purchasing on-line, there is a lot of distortion that work as a barrier for making a decision. I am not going to get here into deep psychology, only putting what you already know in a frame so you can subtract the distortion created by on line factors of reading other buyers reviews:
1. Many of us (including me) purchase in a mode of “not purchasing”. It means that we like to find reason why not to buy this or this. So when we see a review that warn us, we give it much more weight then 10 other reviews of satisfy buyers.
2. Many of us not really understand the specifications of a product, so when we see a review of someone that do understand we give it too much weight. However is a second thought in many cases ignorance equals happiness. What I am try to say is that our expectations are probably on a different levels from “expert” expectations. He or She are more likely to be disappointed, or criticize.
The point is very simple – do not expect to get Mercedes in the prices of Hyundai! Shopping “fast” and easily without taking you butt outside to jewelers has many advantages but “perfect match” is not one of them. Yet, show me one shopkeeper that has the patient to show you and discuss with you about 40 different models.
So all I can say is that for on-line purchase use on-line perspective plus few of the tricks I just showed you above.
Good Luck
